More or Less

April 22, 2009

Anyone interested in evidence and statistics (and why are you here if you’re not!) should check out Radio 4’s excellent More or Less which has just started a new series. The programme focusses on statistics in the news, where the data come from and how they shape policy and opinion. The latest programme has a fascinating insight into the evidence around drug decriminalisation, the link between drowning cats and the credit crunch and Charles Clarke talking about his favourite numbers(!)

The BBC website’s More or Less page has loads of interesting background articles as well as the very popular podcast. A very entertaining and worthwhile listen and a reminder not to take data at face value.

Michael Blastland, the journalist behind the series, gave an excellent talk on the use and abuse of statistics in the media at this year’s LARIA conference.
